Suspension Tube
Description
Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube: Fork Stanchion
The aluminum bicycle suspension tube is the sliding tube (stanchion) of a suspension fork. Its upper end is fixed in the crown and its lower end slides inside the fork’s lower leg, carrying friction and bending loads as the suspension works. This version is a long slender tube with a flanged end and bore, which can serve as a seat for internal damper or spring components.
The stanchion’s outer diameter is the running surface for seals and bushings, so it needs tight diameter tolerance, good roundness and straightness, and usually a hard-anodized or other wear-resistant surface. Al Forge Tech (AFT) cold impact extrudes the tube and end, finish-turns the outer diameter and end, straightens and inspects straightness after heat treatment, and offers hard anodizing.
Key Features
- Tube body and flanged end cold formed
- OD finish-turned as the running surface for seals and bushings
- Straightened after heat treatment to control straightness
- Hard anodizing available for wear resistance

Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube Manufacturing Process
- Drawing review and DFM: we confirm alloy, load direction and critical dimensions, then run QForm simulation to predict metal flow and defect risk.
- Die design and manufacturing: the number of die sets (for example, blocker and finisher dies) is planned around part complexity, and die contours are checked with a portable 3D scanner.
- Cold forging: impact extrusion on 260T–2,500T presses, suited to thin-walled, tubular and dimensionally repeatable parts.
- Heat treatment: T4 solution treatment and T6 artificial aging are performed in-house, with parameters set by alloy and strength requirement.
- CNC machining and finishing: holes, threads and mating surfaces are machined, followed by deburring, vibratory finishing, shot blasting or anodizing as required.
- Inspection and shipment: dimensions, hardness and chemical composition are verified with CMM, hardness testers and a spectrometer, with lot traceability kept under IATF 16949.
FAQ
Why does a suspension stanchion need hard anodizing?
The stanchion OD rubs continuously against seals and bushings as the fork works; insufficient surface hardness leads to wear and scoring, causing oil leaks or sticky action. Hard anodizing forms a thicker, harder oxide layer on aluminum, improving wear and corrosion resistance. AFT offers hard anodizing, and film thickness must be planned with the OD tolerance on the drawing because the coating affects final size.
How are stanchion OD and straightness controlled?
After impact extruding the tube, AFT completes heat treatment and straightening first, then finish-turns the outer diameter so final dimensions are not affected by heat-treatment distortion. Diameter, roundness and straightness are then inspected with CMM and gauges; where surface treatment follows, machining size allows for film thickness.
Can the Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube be anodized or given other surface finishes?
Yes. Al Forge Tech offers anodizing (including hard anodizing), shot blasting, vibratory finishing, e-coating and painting, plus pickling and ultrasonic washing lines to clean parts after machining. Please note the finish type and film thickness on the drawing so machining allowances and cosmetic standards for the Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube can be evaluated together.
How are MOQ and lead time for the Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube determined?
MOQ and lead time depend on part size, number of die sets, alloy and machining scope, and are confirmed in the quotation after drawing review. The typical sequence is die development, forged samples, sample approval and then mass production. Sharing your annual volume and call-off schedule helps us plan dies and capacity for the Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube.
Can Al Forge Tech supply the Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube from forging through machining?
Yes. Forging, heat treatment, CNC machining, surface finishing and inspection are integrated in one facility: 52 CNC machining centers (40 four-axis and 12 4.5-axis), 30 lathes (14 with robotic loading), plus broaching, burnishing and centerless grinding. The Aluminum Bicycle Suspension Tube can be delivered as a forged blank, semi-finished or fully machined part.
