Monotube-1
Description
Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube: Outer Tube for Pickup Truck Mono-Tube Shocks
The aluminum shock absorber monotube is the outer body of a mono-tube damper used on pickup trucks and similar vehicles. The part shown is a long thin-walled tube with one open end and a mounting eye at the other for attachment to the frame or suspension arm. In a mono-tube shock, oil and the gas chamber share the same tube, so the body must carry internal pressure, piston friction and suspension impacts.
Al Forge Tech (AFT) cold impact extrudes the thin-walled body for even wall thickness and a smooth bore, then finishes the bore, ends and mounting eye to drawing. An aluminum body is lighter than steel and dissipates heat better, suiting off-road and performance suspension. AFT’s automotive suspension work also includes reservoir tubes, spring seats, lock rings and valve housings.
Key Features
- Thin-wall body cold formed with even wall and smooth bore
- Lightweight aluminum with good heat dissipation
- Mounting eye and body machined to an integrated design
- Bore finished for piston fit; anodizing available

Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube Manufacturing Process
- Drawing review and DFM: we confirm alloy, load direction and critical dimensions, then run QForm simulation to predict metal flow and defect risk.
- Die design and manufacturing: the number of die sets (for example, blocker and finisher dies) is planned around part complexity, and die contours are checked with a portable 3D scanner.
- Cold forging: impact extrusion on 260T–2,500T presses, suited to thin-walled, tubular and dimensionally repeatable parts.
- Heat treatment: T4 solution treatment and T6 artificial aging are performed in-house, with parameters set by alloy and strength requirement.
- CNC machining and finishing: holes, threads and mating surfaces are machined, followed by deburring, vibratory finishing, shot blasting or anodizing as required.
- Inspection and shipment: dimensions, hardness and chemical composition are verified with CMM, hardness testers and a spectrometer, with lot traceability kept under IATF 16949.
FAQ
What does a mono-tube shock body require from manufacturing?
In a mono-tube shock the piston slides directly in the body and a high-pressure gas chamber sits inside, so the tube needs even wall thickness, good bore roundness and straightness, and sufficient pressure strength. After impact extruding the body, AFT finishes the bore and ends to drawing and inspects roundness, straightness and other critical dimensions with CMM and gauges.
What automotive suspension parts has AFT produced?
AFT’s automotive suspension work includes shock body caps and piggyback reservoirs, reservoir tubes, spring seats, lock rings, valve housings and yokes, shock body end eyes, and pickup truck and SUV suspension parts for both OE and aftermarket programs. This experience helps evaluate alloy, wall thickness and machining approach for a new shock body.
What information do you need to quote the Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube?
Please send a 3D model and 2D drawing, alloy grade and temper, critical tolerances, surface finish requirements, estimated annual volume and target delivery date. Complete data lets our engineers judge forging feasibility, the number of die sets and the machining scope for the Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube at the quotation stage. If the design is still conceptual, a sketch is enough to start a DFM discussion.
Can Al Forge Tech supply the Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube from forging through machining?
Yes. Forging, heat treatment, CNC machining, surface finishing and inspection are integrated in one facility: 52 CNC machining centers (40 four-axis and 12 4.5-axis), 30 lathes (14 with robotic loading), plus broaching, burnishing and centerless grinding. The Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube can be delivered as a forged blank, semi-finished or fully machined part.
Can the Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube be anodized or given other surface finishes?
Yes. Al Forge Tech offers anodizing (including hard anodizing), shot blasting, vibratory finishing, e-coating and painting, plus pickling and ultrasonic washing lines to clean parts after machining. Please note the finish type and film thickness on the drawing so machining allowances and cosmetic standards for the Aluminum Shock Absorber Monotube can be evaluated together.
