Forged Aluminum Mountaineering Fastener (Oval): Oval Link with Central Plate
The oval forged aluminum mountaineering fastener is a connector for climbing and outdoor gear with an oval outer ring and an angled central plate inside. The gaps between ring and plate let rope or webbing pass through. Ring and plate are forged in one piece for a compact structure used to guide, adjust or connect rope.
Because this fastener combines a ring frame with an inner plate, metal must fill both the ring and the thinner plate during forging, which demands careful die design and material distribution. The triangular fastener has a single opening and is used to secure webbing or as a connecting ring. The oval fastener adds a central plate inside the ring so rope or webbing can be threaded through it for guiding or adjustment. Their shapes and load paths differ, so AFT evaluates alloy selection and forging sequence based on the brand’s drawing and intended use.
How is underfill avoided when forging the ring and thin plate together?
The thin plate area resists metal flow more, and insufficient or poorly distributed billet volume can leave underfill at the plate edges. AFT first simulates flow direction with QForm, adjusts billet shape and flash gutter design, and adds a preform stage if needed so material reaches the plate before the finisher die completes the ring contour.
